6 Breakfasts That Do Not Aid Weight Loss

We all know about the benefits of a power breakfast and how it is the most important meal of the day. What a lot of us don’t know is that there are some kind of breakfasts that are better than the others, especially if one is trying to lose weight. A healthy breakfast includes fiber, protein and healthy fat that gives you energy and makes you feel full. In contrast, an unhealthy breakfast can make you feel sluggish, cause you to gain weight and increase your risk of lifestyle diseases.

A well-rounded breakfast combined with moderate exercise will actually help you lose weight, so don’t think of skipping that meal for sure. Eating a meal in the morning can actually help you reach your weight-loss goal, and here’s  why:

Breakfast jump-starts your metabolism: If you skip the first meal of the day, your metabolism actually slows down to conserve energy. Studies show that those who eat breakfast regularly lose weight, and are less likely to be overweight. Breakfast eaters also more likely to exercise regularly, hence maintaining a smaller waistline. So be sure you eat that power packed breakfast.

Fiber & Protein fills you and flattens your belly:  Fiber not only keeps you feeling full longer so you’re less apt to feel snacky between meals, it also reduces the bloating associated with constipation, which makes your tummy appear flatter. For some great  tips on how to get a flat tummy without exercise, click here.

I have rounded up a few of the worst indulgences for breakfast, which are terrible if your goal is to lose weight (surprise! surprise!)

1- Fruit-based smoothies: Fruit is great to include on your breakfast menu, but not when juiced. By juicing you are removing all the fiber and taking in only the sugar. Also, an only fruit-based smoothie, without any proteins or fiber will make you hungry soon after. A healthy smoothie option is to include protein powder, yogurt, soy milk, beans, or tofu for protein, and throw in a little avocado, nuts or nut butter, chia seeds, or flax meal for filling fats. Adding some extra fiber of kale or spinach or bananas ensures a wholesome smoothie.

2- Cereal: Added sugar may very well be the single worst ingredient in the modern diet. It is making us fat and unhealthy, and most people are eating way too much of it. However, most people aren’t pouring all that sugar on top of their food – they are getting it from processed foods. Interestingly, breakfast cereals are some of the most commonly consumed processed foods that are high in added sugars. In fact, most of them have sugar listed as the second or third ingredient!! Starting the day with a high-sugar breakfast cereal will spike your blood sugar and insulin levels. A few hours later, your blood sugar may crash, and your body will crave another high-carb meal or snack, thus creating a vicious cycle of overeating.  Of course, not all cereals are created equal, so as long as you can find one that offers you most benefits, you’re golden.

3- Flavoured Oatmeal: Tiny packets of maple brown sugar or apple cinnamon instant oatmeal seem healthy, but they contain lots of sugar and some even have artificial sugars like sucrose and artificial colors. Buying plain quick oats and flavoring it yourself with fruit and a little maple syrup, agave, or honey is healthier, but what’s even better? Making overnight oats the night before using rolled oats (they’ll keep you satisfied longer since they’re less processed) and chia seeds. To make your own overnight oats, click on this easy step-by-step tutorial and also check out some more amazingly tasty, healthy oats recipes.

4- Bagel sandwiches: The more you think about the breakfast sandwich, the more glorious it becomes. That soft, pillowy egg; that crispy, salty meat; that gooey, melty cheese; all perfectly nestled between the doughy goodness of toasted bread. It makes you believe all is right with the world. And yet, when you start to dissect what’s actually in this sandwich, which is not much you start to wonder where the morning went all wrong. Adding an egg will help, but then that egg will serve you better on avocado toast or a whole-wheat English muffin instead.

5- Sweetened non-fat yogurt: A bowl of plain, whole-milk Greek yogurt topped with berries is a great example of a healthy breakfast. However, a container of fat-free, sugar-sweetened fruit yogurt is not. In fact, many flavored non-fat yogurts contains more sugar than a comparable serving of ice cream. Fat helps keep you full because it takes longer to digest than carbs, and it also triggers the release of the fullness hormone cholecystokinin. Removing the fat from dairy products and adding sugar changes a nutritious breakfast option into food that is better suited as an occasional treat. So skip this one for sure.

6- Granola Bars: Granola bars may sound like great breakfast options, but they’re often no better than candy bars. Although unprocessed oats are high in fiber, granola bars provide only 1–3 grams of fiber, on average. However, they contain a lot of added sugar. In fact, some of the most popular brands contain a combination of sugar, corn syrup, and honey. Large amounts of these sugars can raise blood sugar, insulin levels, and inflammation. Further driving up their sugar content, granola bars sometimes contain chocolate chips or dried fruit. The protein content of granola bars also tends to be low, further confirming that they are a poor breakfast choice. In a nutshell,  granola bars contain sugar that raises insulin levels & also lack protein & fiber which are essential breakfast components.

Now wasn’t that just…

Until next time💋💋 stay fabulous!!

5 foods for fabulous skin

Its not only the pizza and the soda which are to be blamed for skin breakouts and a dull, uneven complexion. Read on to know the foods that dermatologists recommend feeding your skin.

Green Tea: Skip your morning coffee (yeah, i know thats a toughie) in place of the skin-boosting drink, for great skin.  Tea itself is great for hydration, which is paramount for skin health. Hydrated skin looks healthier and shows fewer wrinkles than dehydrated skin. The added benefit of green tea, rather than just water, is the remarkable ingredient called polyphenols  that neutralize free radicals and help maintain collagen and elastin, which is the basis for healthy skin. You cannot go wrong with green tea.

Citrus fruits: These contain high levels of Vitamin C- which keep the skin firm and fight free radicals.  Research suggests that vitamin C supplementation might increase collagen protein synthesis, thus helping repair damaged skin. So grab those oranges and lemons from the vegetable aisle.

Carrots: Tossing a carrot into your food could have ample of skin benefits. Carrots are rich in vitamin A, which helps reduce oil production, acne, and prevents wrinkle formation. It is recommended  adding it to a regular diet of two to three servings per week to promote better skin.

Yogurt: Dairy freaks can rejoice. Yogurt does not  wreak havoc on your complexion. Infact Probiotic foods such as yogurt have  skin-calming bacteria that maintains the ideal pH balance and  improves the quality of your skin. Not to mention the great effects on your gut. Harsh skin products can tilt this balance, just like bacteria-disrupting oral medications and stress—all leading to inflamed, irritated skin.

Pomegranate: Fruits that contain high levels of antioxidants and natural anti-inflammatories help fight free radical damage and premature aging of skin.  Pomegranate is a great skin-booster. Even a small amount of pomegranate packs a dense amount of antioxidants, making it an effective source for better skin. It is important to eat the actual fruit to reap the benefits. This helps ensure that you’re not diluting the  amounts of antioxidants.

5 “Airport” Fashion Mistakes To Avoid

Vacation season is here. While I personally prefer comfort over fashion while planning my airport outfit (but that’s just me) here are my two-bits on what NOT to wear at the airport. Having just returned from a Bali vacation  (it was wonderful, thank you!) I knew I just had to put out a post on the airport/ flight discomforts many (most) of us endure in the name of fashion.

Read below to see what to avoid wearing at airports and on flights.

Uncomfortable Footwear:

I cannot stress the importance of this point enough. I personally choose my footwear first and decide my outfit around it. Ballerinas or slip-on or fashionable keds. Avoid flip-flops too because of their bad grip. Because airports are huge areas and one has to walk for miles around, whether its to grab that coffee or to rush to that boarding gate. So many women totter around airports uncomfortably, barely keeping up on their feet in high-heeled shoes. Beats me why one would do that! Unless of course you’re Victoria Beckham, because then you can 😉

You will be spending a lot of time at the airport and on the flight  before you get to take this thing off. Not to mention the cramped flight toilets which makes jumpsuit a bad choice for flights. My guess is you would not want to be  fumbling with all those buckles and zippers. Pulling a jumpsuit on and off is a task normally on a full bladder, it is many X tougher to do so at an airport or on a flight. Even though i love this wretched trend and i refuse to give up on jumpsuits, I can recall many, many episodes where there’s been a dash between the bladder and the zipper. And Iam not even talking about crowded airport loos.

Minimal, summer outfits:

Yes, I know you can’t wait to reach your each destination (don’t we all?), but don’t forget the sub-zero tempratures you will have to endure at the airport and on your flight. If you must don your favourite summer outfit to the airport, don’t forget to carry a warm stole and socks for the flight. Remember to “layer up”.

“That” outfit you’ve been dying to show-off:

Save it for the vacation and not for the airport. Tempting as it might be to post fab airport selfies and pics in your designer outfit and get 500 likes for it, wisdom is to pack it and keep it for the actual holiday. The airport/ aeroplane is just the right place to spoil your expensive dress. Not to mention the discomfort you might be in.

Heavy Perfume/ Heavy Jewellery:

Yes, we don’t want to be sitting next to that person who is a walking advertisement for a perfume ad. Be mindful and by that I mean please do not smell like yesterdays underwear either (in that case, i’ll take the walking advertisement please). Apply little  because you can always reload on the perfume in the flight bathroom. Same with heavy metal jewellery- less is more. We do not want the fellow passengers to be listening to our bangles clanking every minute!

8 Things To Remember Before Your Next Bikini Wax

Summer is here and that means the swimsuit season is upon us. And that also means scheduling a bikini wax appointment (yeah, i know its not one of the salon visits to look forward to, atleast for moi). You don’t need to be embarrassed or self-conscious when it comes to getting your bits stripped, but you do need to know what’s what to get a safe and smooth wax. So here is my list ladies, to make it easier for you.

1- No Shaving:  You have to let it grow out wild n free (atleast for 4 weeks) before your appointment. If the hair is not long enough it means more pain and an uneven finish. And we don’t want that, do we?

2- Hot Wax Only: Check that your salon uses only HOT wax on sensitive areas-  Some salons will say they do and when you get there they use strip wax. Hot wax is a thick wax that they apply and then remove with just their hand. Strip wax is wonderful but shouldn’t be used on the areas mentioned as it’s notas gentle, and can leave you feeling sore. If they don’t use hot wax on bikini, Hollywood or Brazilian waxing then run for the hills.

3- Chocolate Wax is better: My personal experience again. Chocolate wax is better, smoother and actually prevents growth for a little bit longer than regular, honey wax. It is worth splurging a bit more of cash on.

4-  Exfoliate before you bare: To get the best results and to achieve silky soft skin, you need to prepare it pre-wax. Gently exfoliate and moisturize a day or two before your salon appointment as this will help the hairs break through, and be easier to be pulled out from the root. A regular body scrub should do.

5- Don’t swim for 24 hours After: If you’ve just been waxed,  keep up the moisturising but stay away from pool & sea as pool and seawater can be very drying. Follow your salon’s aftercare advice and don’t go swimming until 24hrs after your waxing to avoid infections.

6- Careful while Sunbathing: Whatever you do, DO NOT expose the waxed body parts to the sun until 24-48 hours after your waxing as this sensitive skin will easily burn and you could be left with permanent pigmentation marks (dark brown patches). If you start to feel freshly waxed areas tingling when sunbathing then apply a higher SPF.

7- Choose a skilled waxer: Again from personal experience – ALL salons offer waxing but not all of them do it well. A Brazilian wax shouldn’t be intimidating, but you’ll want to find a therapist who’s had proper training – you might realise (like i did) shockingly, that a lot of “specialists” have had no training in Brazilian waxing at all. You shouldn’t have to ask for thoroughness – an expert will know what she’s doing and you’ll know that she knows what she’s doing.

8- Moisturise Moisturise: Cant stress this enough. And coconut oil works wonders to reduce post-wax discomfort. Oh! And please do not try to do this yourself at home. There are some things we have to depend on the specialist for and this happens to be one.

And remember to BREATHE through it ;)))

Priyanka dazzles at the MET Gala, Deepika fails to impress

This year the Met Gala theme was Comme des Garcons and a celebration of the visionary designer Res Kawakubo. The evening saw the coming together of some of the biggest names in films, fashion and music, with each guest interpreting the theme in their own way, which was nominated by Anna Wintour.

Some guests took the theme literally, and opted for outfits which were a reminder of Kawakubo’s wearable pieces of art. Rihanna & Rita Orra being a few. But our desi girl Priyanka Chopra set the red carpet on fire with her long skin-colour trench-dress. Keeping in mimd the theme which was the ‘Art of the In-Between’ – a fashion style that merges two or more fashion styles. Check out her costume here

While Priyanka was lauded by the fashion fraternity, with even Vogue tweeting about her dress, Deepika failed to flutter. For the occasion, she chose a look that was nowhere close to the theme, opting for an ethereal—and nearly backless—dress by all-American designer Tommy Hilfiger and starry Fred Leighton jewels worth buying an island with.
To get her photo ready, she got her long, dark lengths back into a center-parted, low-slung chignon topped by a constellation of glittering diamond ornaments. I love how she looked but it wasn’t Met -worthy. Definately Oscar red carpet worthy, but thats for another day.

Fashion faux-pas that petite girls should avoid

Good things come in small (short) packages. But if you feel your clothes are not looking the way they should, you can be making the following mistakes. Read on to know what to avoid if you are petite.

Tunic Tops: Well, let me just say that tunic tops were not designed for petite frames. Choose crop tops instead to give the illusion of height.

Oversize Bags: A huge bag will add bulk to your frame and it might look like its going to swallow you whole. Opt for small/mid size bags.

Round-toe heels: I think this rule applies universally to all of us. Choose pointy toes heels to give an illusion of endless legs. Round toe heels just kill the entire look…see what i mean

Horizontal Stripes: This is a common mistake we all tend to make. Horizontal stripes are a height-cutter. Flip the stripes to vertical to add an illusion of a couple of inches.

Midi Skirts and Ankle Length Skirts : This hemline does not flatter short frames. Choose knee-length or go for mini skirts instead. And if you must wear them, then stay clear of BOLD prints. Go for solid colours and no prints please.

Kim K takes it a bit too far

Kim Kardashian has been known to take fashion risks. But this latest look on a night out in LA left me a little perplexed. Here’s why:

Am i the only one who thinks that a satin bra with lace underwear is NOT cool? Its like she didn’t have the time to throw on the main outfit so she tried to make underwear look like an outfit. Or maybe she wanted to show off the effects of the “flu-diet”, which got a lot of people a whole lot upset. She took the post down later after coming under fire.

Next time dahlin, try to look a little put-together. Its not too difficult. Believe me.
